Audience Mood Board - Music Magazine

This mood board shows the various interest of K-Pop fans. K-Pop fans are extremely interested in Korean food such as Kimchi and Tteokbokki and traditional culture. They also purchase various merchandise such as albums, posters, flash-lights/light sticks (at concerts) to support their groups. Quite a lot of the fans from the same country get together and do a 'flash mob', dancing to a variety of Korean songs. These flash mobs happen in very noticeable places such as Trafalgar Square. In the mood boad, there are three picture that show a significant colour. K-Pop bands/groups have a significant colour and fans buy the light sticks of their favourite band or the bands' concerts they could be going to. The immense spread of the light sticks in a concert in knows as in "ocean". Above, there's a red ocean (band: TVXQ), blue ocean (band: Super Junior) and yellow ocean (band: Big Bang). The 'ocean' signifies the unity of fans that stand together to support the bands.

Main Task - Music Magazine - Planning

Music Magazine Planning

What is the genre of the music magazine?
The genre of my music magazine is K-Pop. I chose this genre because although it main consists of mainstream pop music of South Korea, it gives me a chance to explore the other sub-genres of this genre, allowing me be more creative with the style and concept of my music magazine.

Who is the target audience? How old are they? Where do they live? What are their interests?
My target audience are mainly teenage females and males of the age of 15-19 (maybe more) that are interested in K-Pop. K-Pop fans reside world-wide, from Korea and Japan to UK and France to India and Africa; they are everywhere. Their interests are mainly music - K-Pop but also include things such as Korean fashion, language and culture.

What is the name of your magazine? Why? Connotations?
I have decided on 3 names.
1) Whut's Poppin'? - I chose this because it's an slang term of asking 'what's going on?/what's up?' which is mainly used in America. In context to K-Pop, I chose it to connote 'What's the latest news/releases?'. It's also short/intro song by a K-Pop boy-band called B.A.P.

2) Spectrum - I chose this because a spectrum is a condition that is not limited to specific set of values but it can vary infinitely within a continuum (measurement). In scientific terms, it's also a range of characteristic series of electromagnetic radiation. The first connotation is that it doesn't limit fans to just one artist or sub-genre; there are many genres they can explore and listen to - fans are not restricted from anything. The second connotation is that it symbolises the 'magnetic' connection with the fans. Fans and their favourite type of music (most likely to be K-Pop) have a 'magnetic' connection of attraction.

3) Omona! - I chose this because it's slight cute way of saying the English equivalent of 'Oh my gosh!'. Generally, it's 'Omo' but 'Omona' is expressed in a cute way. Sometimes it can also be used when it's a severe situation and people generally saying 'Omona'. It's also a famous line from world famous girl group Wonder Girl's song Tell Me.

For my final title of my magazine, I'm most likely to choose Omona! because it's a really common word in Korean and almost every fan has heard of it or even has used it. Although there's a slight confusion due to Spectrum.

What will be the focal image for your front cover and why?
My focal image will be of a girl-group consisting of 3 girls - either a full shot or a mid-long shot. It's to show that a new girl-group is debuting. The type of shots I've chosen are to put emphasis on their arrival into the K-Pop industry.

What photography will be required? Give details of shot type, angle and composition.
For my main image, it'll be either a long shot or a mid-long group shot at eye level. There will also be close ups and mid-shots that will be included on my contents page and double spread page. The angle's will vary between eye level, high angle and a mid-low angle.

What mise-en-scene will be required? Location? Clothing? Make Up? Lighting? Use of colour?
Location:
Front Image - the models will be standing in either a white room or black/dark grey room/setting depending on the colour of their costumes. The location will help reflect the meaning that is expressed through the colour of the costumes of my models.
Double-spread page - my model (portrayed as a solo artist) will either be in a dark room, that sort of looks vintage or just have a black/gray back-ground.

Clothing: My front cover models will be wearing dresses that slightly show their figure. The colour of the dresses is most likely to be either red or white, depicting seduction yet innocence. My double spread page model is most likely to be wearing a black dress which expresses the concept of a strong and fierce yet feminine look.

Make-up: The make-up is most likely to be normal make-up consisting of eye-liner (liquid and pencil), lip gloss or lipstick, and eye-shadow and the colour of the lipstick and eye-shadow will depend on the colour of the clothing to make everything match well together.

Lighting: For my front cover, it'll be slightly front lighting, showing everything in the frame. For my double spread, the lighting wouldn't show everything but just illuminate the model - resembling the low key chiaroscuro lighting. For other images, it will vary between back lighting, front lighting, natural ambient lighting and low key chiaroscuro lighting (maybe).

Colour: The colour scheme will mainly depend on the colour of the clothing because I want the colour to match together and blend in with each other. The colour scheme is mainly focused on three colours - red, white and black. However, this is subject to change depending on the colour of clothing and also maybe due to the location.

What would be your sell-lines? How will your entice your target audience?
My sell-line will mention latest releases, teasers of comebacks, reviews and giveaways/free poster or CD. I will entice them by the giveaways and also by talking about the more famous artists and comebacks of artists in that certain month.

What items and feature articles would you need on your contents page?
My feature articles will consist of interview, possibly the profile of the newly debuted group and achievements such as winning a grand award on a prestigious music awards. One of my feature articles would be reunion of the 5 TVXQ members.

What is the focus of your double spread page?
The focus of my double spread page in an interview with a solo artist (either a new artist or a comeback  - not decided yet) which is also one of the feature articles.

What photography will be required for the double spread page?
As mentioned above, the photography for the double spread page will either be a long shot or a mid-long shot at mostly likely eye level or mid-low angle. There's a possibility of a close up as well.

Music Magazine Analysis: Comparison of two different front covers of the same artist

Comparison

Both magazines have just one image of Michael Jackson to indicate that this issue of the magazine is based and focused on him. They both also have the masthead at the top of the page. The major difference between these two front covers is the actual image. Entertainment weekly has a image of him smiling whereas Rolling Stone has a very serious and sad image of him. In the Entertainment weekly, it depicts the emotions of proud, happiness, and also that Michael Jackson will forever be in our memories which is shown by the grey-scale image of him during the his Thriller era. However, Rolling Stone shows a much serious expression through which sadness and emptiness can be picked up. This image shows the actual real emotions that Michael must have been feeling in his last moments – from being accused to have numerous controversies. The exhaustion is his face show that he’s had enough of everything.

The headlines of the magazine, although they are about the same person yet create a different meaning through the way they are written. In Entertainment weekly, it’s sort of written in a way to say that the latest entertainment is Michael Jackson’s death which doesn't make the issue look that serious. Whereas, Rolling Stone have a very effective headline – they sum up his life, his emotions is just two works “Hope & Ruin”. This creates a very strong effect as both of these are opposites of each other and could also indicate that one thing lead to another in his life.

Preliminary Task - School Magazine - Planning

Who is your target audience?
My magazine is aimed at teenagers, specifically between the age of 16-18. It's also targeted at pupils who attend a sixth form or a college. Students will be able to get revision tips and also learn how to deal with the stress of starting a sixth form/college. It will also inform them about the leisure activities such as clubs to help maintain the balance between working and relaxing.

What is the name of your magazine?
My magazine is called 'FOCUS'. I named it FOCUS because it's something that students have to do all the time during their time in further education. If they don't focus, they will not learn anything properly and this will result in having lower grades than they had expected. The masthead will be quite bold and written in capital letters, and it will also be white so that it can stand out from the colours of the main image.

Who will be your front cover model and why?
My front cover model will be a student in a uniform, sitting on the floor with many books in front of her. Her facial expression would be a mixture of stress, anger, and sadness. These emotions will be displayed through her appearance - her mascara will be running down her face showing that she has been crying. I chose this because students will be able to actually see what stress can do to you. Along with talking about the results of getting stressed, I will also mention how to deal with this stress.

What sort of shot will it be?
It will be a medium close-up shot take from a slightly upper angel, similar to a birds eye view.

What mise en scene will be required?
The images will be take place in the library of the school (the TLC) around the areas of the red sofas and the model will be wearing the 6th form uniform. Most of the lighting will be artificial due to the lights in the TLC although there will be some natural light too.

What would be your sell lines? How will you entice your target audience?
I will entice my target audience by highlighting the issues (that are featured in the magazine) that students could be curious about in my sell lines. For example, earning UCAS points, enrichment programmes, tips on how to deal with stress and depression and how to be one step ahead of others.

What items and feature articles will you need on your contents page?
There will be feature articles on dealing with pressure, earning UCAS points, clubs and enrichment programmes, open days of universities, keeping a healthy balanced diet, leisure activites outside the school and it may also contain advertisement.

Front Cover Analysis 2

Music Magazine Front Cover Analysis

This magazine is a pop magazine and this can be noticed in the mast head “WE © POP”. I can be also seen through the images of latest pop artists on the front cover.

The masthead
The masthead is written in funky, capital, bold, black letters. It also used an image of a heart instead of using the word ‘love’. The masthead is written inside a speech bubble which could mean that everyone in the company love pop. It could also be referring to a shout-out from all the fans of pop music.

Photography
The cover has quite a few photographs on it. The main image of ‘The Saturdays’ and the images next to the sell lines has almost a similar expression of shock/bewilderment/surprise. The image of The Saturdays is edited and slight layered which assists the headline – the drama that has been happening in their life.

The caption
The caption uses a power of three and alliteration which creates a larger effect on the reader, attracting more attention and interest. The exclamation mark at the end relates to the main image and it helps exaggerate the headline.

The headline and sell lines
The headline is written in white, capital letters with a bit of blue hue at the edges. The headline has the biggest font size besides the masthead. It’s also quite exaggerated, comparing ‘The Saturdays’ life to a soap opera.
The sell lines are written in light blue with a white highlighted background. They are very colloquial and are also quite exaggerated just like the headline. The language used is quite snappy and short.

The colour scheme
There are three main colours in this colour scheme: Light pink/peach, light blue and white. Black is also seen for a few of the sell-lines. The colours are very light and uplifting. These colours are usually used when then target audience is teenagers, specifically female teenagers.
