Music Magazine Analysis: Comparison of two different front covers of the same artist

Comparison

Both magazines have just one image of Michael Jackson to indicate that this issue of the magazine is based and focused on him. They both also have the masthead at the top of the page. The major difference between these two front covers is the actual image. Entertainment weekly has a image of him smiling whereas Rolling Stone has a very serious and sad image of him. In the Entertainment weekly, it depicts the emotions of proud, happiness, and also that Michael Jackson will forever be in our memories which is shown by the grey-scale image of him during the his Thriller era. However, Rolling Stone shows a much serious expression through which sadness and emptiness can be picked up. This image shows the actual real emotions that Michael must have been feeling in his last moments – from being accused to have numerous controversies. The exhaustion is his face show that he’s had enough of everything.

The headlines of the magazine, although they are about the same person yet create a different meaning through the way they are written. In Entertainment weekly, it’s sort of written in a way to say that the latest entertainment is Michael Jackson’s death which doesn't make the issue look that serious. Whereas, Rolling Stone have a very effective headline – they sum up his life, his emotions is just two works “Hope & Ruin”. This creates a very strong effect as both of these are opposites of each other and could also indicate that one thing lead to another in his life.
